Migration as Crisis? German Migration Discourse at Critical Points of Nation-Building

This article enquires how the Federal Republic of Germany has governed migration at critical junctures German nation-building within a growing European Union. Drawing on documents “Einwanderung” (immigration) from archive Bundestag 1949 until 2022, and secondary literature media representations (forced) migration, migrants, refugees, this traces different depictions in political discourse moments to answer question: Which role does narrative “migration as crisis” play for project? I argue that question, it is necessary understand whether an incoming migrant group considered beneficial or dangerous (“critical”) hegemonic articulations imagined national identity.
